5 days of relaxation!

What do you do when you have 5 whole days to spend at the Hill?  Why eat, drink and play of course.  So that’s what we did.

We had a wonderful menu (if I do say so myself); smoked chicken, smoked ribs, smoked salmon, smoked cheese, pulled pork (cooked for 14 hours), steak, barbacoa.  And of couse yummy veggies and salads along the way.

We also spent some time hanging out by the pool and enjoying the sauna.  The crowds were great for people watching.  Bruce has managed to make that place into the ultimate resort.

And we can’t forget the star watching at the airstrip.  What a wonderful time.

Cough Syrup

My DH has been fighting a cold for weeks.  No it hasn’t turned into pneumonia yet, but as usual it has turned into a nasty cough.  So, what do I do about that?  We ended up at the Hill a few weeks ago with no Nyquil and him feeling miserable, so I invented a cough syrup recipe.  It’s similar to what some wonderful people in France made me on my honeymoon when I was very sick, but G says this is the best cough syrup ever.  (He also claims it is just a really nice drink and at the moment he likes it more than dirty martinis).  Enjoy.

Hill Arieous Cough Syrup

  • 4 oz red wine (I usually use a Cabernet)
  • 1 oz brandy
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnammon

Mix wine, brandy, and lemon juice together and heat in microwave for 1 minute.  Add honey and cinnamon, stir until blended.  Enjoy.

Thoughts on Handicapped Access

As some of you know I’ve spent the last 3 months rolling around on a knee walker to have any chance of going anywhere at all.  I have a few thoughts on handicapped access as it is today and what we might do to make it better.

First, I’m convinced the Americans with Disabilities Act really did change the world.  In most places I have actually been able to get where I needed to go without too much difficulty.   That’s truly amazing.  I don’t know what it was like before ADA, but I’m sure it wasn’t that good.

Second, we can do a lot better.  I wish Americans could all have to deal with wheels for a few days.  If you could see the world from their eyes you would feel very differently about it.  My biggest difficulty to date is very steep, bumpy curb cuts.  Yes, you can get up them, but it is really hard and very scary.  If you have to roll over a 1/2″ bump to get up onto the curb cut itself, it’s going to be difficult.  Especially with the small wheels at the front of wheel chairs there just isn’t time.  You have to turn around and go up them quickly with impatient traffic waiting.  Please, think about that as you do your planning.  It is just bad design.  Almost as bad, very steep hills.  I can manage them on my knee walker, but someone without a powered wheel chair would have to work really hard.

Third, if you got caught in the litigation around the ADA, that’s awful.  All I can ask is that we all put ourselves in the other persons shoes.  Make it as easy as you can, do what you can and care about people and this should all sort itself out.

What I didn’t learn from this experience was what it would be like to be at the height of someone sitting in a wheelchair.  I suspect that would be much more scary than even the issues that I had to deal with.  Please think about those issues as well.

In conclusion, we’re doing great but we could do better.  As you navigate through life, think about what you would like to see if you were the person with the wheels.

Note to self…

Furniture is never easy to put together, even when it is supposed to be.

G&M assembled a Pinnacle Design TV Stand yesterday (Model TV33003) and although the latches look very clever, it is ridiculously hard to assemble.

Note to self…

The knee walker is the best invention ever for broken ankles.

Note to self…

Note to self… when hiking in the mountains always take walking sticks and not a dog.  Otherwise, you might roll down a hill and break your ankle.

Tales of a Carpool Lane Junkie

Today’s Driver: Pedestrians and Cyclists

Today I’ve decided not to rant about stupid drivers on the road.  I could.  I still have many stories to tell.  But I thought I’d just add a reminder to all drivers that we don’t completely own the road.

If you ride a bicycle, please be careful and don’t do stupid things (like trying to cut in front of long lines of cars.) But if you’re a driver these riders are actually doing something good for themselves and the planet.  Cheer them on.  And be patient with them.  They have just as much right to the road as we do.

If you see a pedestrian. Again, just be careful. People walk for many reasons and sometimes they really don’t have a choice.  Try not to run them off the road. Give them room and be polite. Let them cross the street safely. (I know it’s the law, but don’t ignore it.)

That’s Lora’s thought for today.  Just be careful and considerate.  The world will be a much better place.

Tales from a Carpool Lane Junkie

Today’s Driver: The Merger

I didn’t get to do much riding in the carpool lane this week. Unfortunately.  But all drivers in all lanes have met with “the merger.”  In fact, I really want to know where all these people learned to drive. Either that, or when they they lost all courtesy.

When you were learning to drive, I’m sure your parents taught you to take turns with other cars when merging.  And if someone was driving down the freeway a half mile ahead of you and they put on their turn signal you were supposed to stay where you were and let them over.   Both those habits seem to have gone the way of the dinosaur.

When trying to get over now, if you look for a big hole then put your turn signal on and then try to go over 9 times out of 10 someone will speed up and cut you off.  The only way to make it work now is to find that hole and put your signal on and go.  If  you don’t some idiot will cut you off.

And that behavior is only superseded in annoyance when traffic is slowly merging together.  Rather than taking turns, the merger will creep up on your side from behind and eventually force you to slow down and let them in even if  you have already let 2 or 3 other cars in in front of them.

The missing theme from their driving…. courtesy!  Where did it go?  Why has it left? Did someone steal it?  I challenge you to try to drive with a little courtesy this week. Maybe if enough people try it things will change. But… I doubt it.

So “be careful out there.” And just let the “mergers” be stupid.  Karma will eventually take care of them and you’ll be safe.

The Robinson Canyon Road Traffic Report

Friday, Oct 29, 2010:

Friday’s traffic set new records.  We met our usual 5 cars on the road.  That’s not at all surprising in the late afternoon on Friday.  Workmen are heading home and residents are heading out.   But we had 3 “very fast” cars pass  up zooming up the road toward White Rock or the Rancho. I want to know where the party was and why I wasn’t invited.

We also saw 3 deer.  About the usual number since it was getting dark and starting to rain. Next week it will be darker and there will be less wildlife than that.

Let Sleeping Dogs Lie…. Not Possible!

We’ve all heard the expression “Let sleeping dogs lie.”  It means don’t stir up trouble.  I, however, have decided that whoever used it first, could be Chaucer, was very confused.

Why you ask?  Because my sleeping dogs can hear a pin drop.  If I even slightly move to get up they are both awake in an instant just to make sure they don’t miss anything.

Occasionally I get lucky and Pompi (the OLD dog) will stay asleep when I get up and if you scare him too badly when he is sound asleep you are likely to get nipped at.  That must be the case the idiom refers to.  But it really is a special case.

Generally speaking, I have no hope of letting my sleeping dogs lie.

I wonder what happens with cats.
